Crowne Plaza Hotel

Client: Peel Holdings
Builder:
Architect: Benoy
Location: Trafford Centre, Manchester
Value: £26m

This project consists of a new-build 200 bedroom 17-storey 5-star hotel with leisure, conference and banqueting facilities, built adjacent to the Trafford Centre, one of Europe's largest shopping centres.

The site is triangular shaped, bordered by the M60 in two directions and by a major United Utilities service route on another. This presents immediate challenges in terms of the overall site use. An access bridge onto the site was requested as part of the enabling works for this project.

The ground and first floors of the building consist of large clear double height spaces which are to be used for conference, leisure and banqueting facilities. The upper 15 floors will consist of bedroom areas.

Due to the large open spans and the clear height required by the client at ground and first floor, a steel transfer structure will be utilised at these two levels. Given the repetitive nature of the upper floors, tunnel form construction is considered the most appropriate structural solution
