Shepherd Gilmour are delighted to announce that the New Roundhouse in Openshaw, Manchester is a winner in the 2010 RIBA Awards. The RIBA Awards are the most prestigous architectural awards in the UK. Having previously won a Bronze Rose in the 2009 Roses Design Awards, the project overcame stiff competition and was one of six north-west winning projects.

The building is located in the New East Manchester regeneration zone, and provides community and learning spaces for three organisations – a local charity organisation, Manchester Settlement, a housing association, Mosscare and a sixth form college, Manchester College.

The apparently simple structural form belied the complexity required to accommodate the requirements of multiple end-users and building the building around the atrium which created a naturally ventilated space. The judges said the building creates, “a strong civic presence” and “an interesting interior spatial quality, linking together the projects different activities”. Now goes forward to the shortlisting process for the Stirling Prize, the UK’s premier building award.

Giles Burton, Shepherd Gilmour’s Director for the project, said, “We are delighted that the New Roundhouse has been honoured with another award. For its size and scope, it was a unique project and brought together three different end-users with differing needs.”
